History of the Waconda Cultural Association

Founded -2018

Mission: The aim of Waconda Cultural Association is to preserve history and educate the public on Waconda Springs, its Native American heritage, the building of Waconda Lake and Dam, and the geological layout of the land and related issues.

Since 2017, the WCA (a 501c3 non-profit) has acted as a “Friends” group to support activities and development of the Glen Elder State Park in Mitchell County. Early projects included repurposing the Visitor Center as the Waconda Visitor and Education Center, and restoration of the Waconda Springs Replica, adding educational signage to create an outdoor walking museum.

Events starting on Memorial Weekend and running through Halloween have been added to the State Park calendar. Lakefest is a family day with an evening concert before the Annual Fireworks Display.

The Wakonda Indian Festival is held the first weekend in October, and Ghostly Storytelling on the third weekend in October. The WCA also supports the continuation of the annual Youth Fishing Tournament and the Youth & Ladies Hunt.
